The Trust maintains the public areas/ gardens on the village and the new building and yard form a permanent facility for their landscape maintenance team and are used to store vehicles, equipment, materials, fuel, chemicals, garden waste and plants as well as providing a mess facility for the staff. (They previously operated out of temporary cabins). The overriding design intent was to create a discreet well-mannered building that fits seamlessly within the streetscape of Port Sunlight conservation area borrows its architectural language from the village. The main part of the building has a traditional hipped roof which sits over a continuation of the original Unilever factory front wall line facing the village on Wood Street.

Forum Housing Association were looking to upgrade an existing hostel facility on Bridge Street, Birkenhead that provides supported accommodation to young people between the ages of 16 – 25.
Following approval of HCA funding in November 2010, FHA were then able to fund the project to refurbish and extend the ‘Bridge’ to bring the hostel up to current Decency & Building Regulations Standards.
The building previously contained 26 units with only communal kitchen and bathroom facilities.
In order to retain the 26 units and provide each with their own cooking and bathroom facilities, the building required extensive internal alterations an construction of an additional storey and side extension.
Starting in January 2011, the project was handed over in December 2011.
The ‘Bridge’ now not only provides independent living accommodation but also has on-site offices and assessment facility.
The specification was focused on providing robust, high quality accommodation with a domestic sense without feeling like an institution.
In its extensive refurbishment, the ‘Bridge’ now provides full disabled (DDA) access (which includes accommodation), with new courtyard at rear to provide private amenity space.
A new entrance canopy formed in zinc to match the new mansard storey, and remodelled external ramp and steps, identifies the main entrance.

The project was undertaken using a Partnering Contract with a Design Team comprising of Mellwood Construction (Constructor), Paddock Johnson Partnership (Lead Designer, Contract Administrator & CDM-C), Markhams (Quantity Surveyors) and 20/20 (M&E & Structural Consultants). The total project cost was £1,457,000

The new reception hide at Burton was completed on 19th June 2011. Paddock Johnson Partnership had won the project following a 2 stage design competition run by the RSPB. Situated at the 45 hectare Dee Estuary nature reserve near Burton in Cheshire, the RSPB’s requirements were for a facility to act as a focal point for information and orientation and to offer visitors panoramic views of the newly created wildlife spectacle. The Society was looking for an original building with a strong sense of style, both in terms of its configuration and appearance which should be innovative and sensitively integrated within its environs and designed to the highest environmental and sustainability standards without being extravagant.
Paddock Johnson Partnership and the RSPB feel that these requirements were met with great success.
The hide opens to the public in September 2011

Renaissance in action

Our HMRI Masterplan for Burnley recommended selective clearance to form wide boulevards and parks, creating the opportunity for innovative housing design.

The principal intervention was the forming of new ends to the existing 18th century terraces. The design complements the existing terraces, whilst providing a wholly contemporary backdrop to the new green boulevards.

The terraces fronting the parks were extended vertically to form 3 bed town houses to provide the required mass and scale to enclose and define the parks.

A new build housing solution was also created, utilising MMC whilst maintaining a reference to the historical mill town aesthetic through the selective use of stone, timber and slate. In all, the project allowed for positive reflections of past tradition, within a wholly innovative and contemporary expression.
