The new reception hide at Burton was completed on 19th June 2011. Paddock Johnson Partnership had won the project following a 2 stage design competition run by the RSPB. Situated at the 45 hectare Dee Estuary nature reserve near Burton in Cheshire, the RSPB’s requirements were for a facility to act as a focal point for information and orientation and to offer visitors panoramic views of the newly created wildlife spectacle. The Society was looking for an original building with a strong sense of style, both in terms of its configuration and appearance which should be innovative and sensitively integrated within its environs and designed to the highest environmental and sustainability standards without being extravagant.
Paddock Johnson Partnership and the RSPB feel that these requirements were met with great success.
The hide opens to the public in September 2011

Paddock Johnson Partnership have recently taken handover of the completed ground floor and external refurbishment of the Birkenhead Youth Club, Watson Street, Birkenhead. The new facilities include 2 new all-weather synthetic outdoor pitches with floodlighting and internally, a full refurbishment of the existing facilities to provide modern male and female changing facilities, a new reception area, a modern café space and an educational IT suite with 10 stations. The specification was specifically focused on providing high-quality, robust and overall contemporary fittings. The front and side elevations were completely remodelled to include signage features and a new canopy, marking the main Watson Street entrance. Sliding automatic doors were installed in the main entrance to provide full disabled access, and internally all the specification was geared around providing full DDA accommodation.
The project was commissioned by brothers Geoffrey and Peter Bibby and part funded by the Bibby Shipping Family thereby continuing the long history of the family’s association with the club started by Sir Derek Bibby in 1956. Since re-opening, the number of young people (8 to 18 year olds) has doubled to over 100 attending each evening and the club is increasingly used by the local community of Birkenhead during the day.
The contractor for the project was Read Construction Holdings Ltd, and the Quantity Surveyors were Redfearn, Morrison and Thomas. The total project costs was £500,000.

Paddock Johnson Partnership have designed the first council houses to be built in Bolton for 20 years. Planning approval was recently granted for the £2 million scheme, which will see 17 homes built on land at Hamilton Court, in Little Lever.
The project, which was given a £1 million grant by the government, will see work commencing in February.
The houses - 10 two-bedroom apartments, six semi-detached houses and one detached house – are expected to be ready for tenants in early 2011, and will be managed by Bolton at Home.
Great Places Housing Group is the development agent for the scheme and architects Paddock Johnson were appointed to carry out the design.
The homes have been designed to be energy efficient and will meet the government’s code for sustainable homes level 4. The scheme also contains leisure space and parking provision, with shared communal allotment spaces to the rear of the apartments.
Councillor Nick Peel, Bolton Council’s Executive Member for Housing, said: “These are the first homes we will be building and retaining ownership of in more than two decades. Like all local authorities, we have a real shortage of affordable housing and these houses will help provide much needed new housing for local people. The housing scheme has been designed with careful consideration to the surrounding areas, neighbourhoods and buildings.”
The homes form part of the council’s Transforming Estates programme, which aims to develop around 6,000 new homes of which 3,000 will be for sale and 3,000 for affordable rent over the next 12 years dependent on market conditions and securing planning approval.

Renaissance in action

Our HMRI Masterplan for Burnley recommended selective clearance to form wide boulevards and parks, creating the opportunity for innovative housing design.

The principal intervention was the forming of new ends to the existing 18th century terraces. The design complements the existing terraces, whilst providing a wholly contemporary backdrop to the new green boulevards.

The terraces fronting the parks were extended vertically to form 3 bed town houses to provide the required mass and scale to enclose and define the parks.

A new build housing solution was also created, utilising MMC whilst maintaining a reference to the historical mill town aesthetic through the selective use of stone, timber and slate. In all, the project allowed for positive reflections of past tradition, within a wholly innovative and contemporary expression.
