CONSERVATION > Shore Road Pumping Station
The pumping station has been essential to the removal of ground water seepage from the underground Merseyrail link with Liverpool, from the day it was built.
Paddock Johnson Partnership were appointed by Wirral Borough Council and British Rail to fully refurbish the building, inside and out, and provide a visitor access and public viewing gallery overlooking the remaining, restored “Giant Grasshopper” pump and museum display illustrating the enterprising feats of the Victorian engineers and workmen involved.
Exacting project management was critical to protect the safe and continuous removal of groundwater, now by electric pumps, from the wells over 25m below ground.
It was a pleasure to receive a Certificate of Commendation by the Association of Railway Preservation Societies following the successful completion of this project.
