SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENTS > Women’s Refuge, Wirral
Green keynotes
This project was conceived to provide supported accommodation for family units. The design included a protected court, having a glazed ‘cloister’ to three sides, to enable family members to maintain continuing visual contact. Physical elements of the scheme were designed to encourage contact and support between residents and, through this, to foster independence.
The site included responsibility for a large unprotected oak tree, which pre-dated the surrounding houses. This emblematic feature influenced our design decisions, both technical and aesthetic.
We increased the green footprint of the site by incorporation of a Sedum roof, resulting in 90% of the site being green.
