New horizons at the urban edge
As part of the HMRI selection process, master plans were drawn up for 2 areas in East Lancashire, Burnley and Hyndburn. The existing building stock was mid 18th Century terraced housing.
The areas represented some of those of highest stress within the respective HMRI programmes, reflected in the outward appearance of the buildings.
An innovative approach was required to maintain the area’s character whilst providing a new, quality living environment to stem outward migration & to attract a more diverse range of residents.
The overall design concept was to create unique & identifiable living spaces for people, whilst responding to the wider needs of the community.
